What are the popular meme stocks in Japan?

The typical style of a famous Japanese meme is very different from those found in other countries.

Typically, they involve objects that have been drawn with two or more distinctive characteristics that have nothing to do with each other yet form a coherent image when looked at as a whole.

Meme definition

A meme is an idea or behaviour that spreads from person to person within a culture – essentially serving as a unit for carrying cultural ideas, symbols or practices that can be transmitted from one mind to another through writing, speech, gestures, rituals or other imitable phenomena with a mimicked theme.

Here’s what you should know about them:

Inflation

All the stocks mentioned here use one of these images as their base. They are not related to each other in any way – like how all these memes are unrelated on the surface. Check the comments section for some real-life examples of them being used commercially.

Extremely influential

These stocks are very, very frequently used in memes by Japanese netizens. Because of the sheer amount of people who use these images, their popularity translates to a higher chance that you’ll run into one while browsing through Japanese forums and social media without context. It is a big deal because many Japanese sites do not translate their content into English.

Share per meme

Unlike other countries where popular memes revolve around celebrities or fictional characters, Japan’s most popular meme stocks typically come from real life.

It makes sense, considering how there aren’t any copyright laws restricting their use! But before we get started.

A quick explanation of the share prices:

The numbers indicate how many yen you need to pay for one share of that particular meme stock. Just like real stocks, their value changes depending on demand and popularity!

Higher share prices typically indicate higher overall interest and more people buying them for their memes.

As such, lower share prices are associated with unpopular or unknown stocks that nobody’s heard about – making them perfect as an inside joke among friends!

We will now explain which types of popular Japanese memes correspond best with each stock:

stocks in Japan

Cryptocurrency

The king of all meme-stocks is this scene from the intro sequence to NHK’s ‘News Zero’. It depicts a silver coin falling into a piggy bank that reads “virtual currency” (NEM).

Technology/ companies

The NEM logo and broken English words like ‘secure’ are commonly used in satirical images about cryptocurrency. The Ene meme is often used to caption screenshots of funny videos involving animals or people falling over.

Game reviews

This scene from the second episode of Netflix’s Castlevania TV series where Dracula talks about his plans for world domination has become extremely popular because it’s related to the game franchise! Other popular stock images include silhouettes of Dracula with red eyes and this guy.

Music/labels/artists

These images are used in many lyrics and covers of songs by Japanese VOCALOID producers. You can find more examples. They also represent “circles” (production groups), and these images usually appear with the number of members next to them.

Some memes in Japan

Ebina

We cannot forget about Ebina. There isn’t much to explain here other than she is a character from an anime and she is infamous for her lack of common sense.

There are far too many memes in Japan to list, but here are a few more:

Sato-chan

A character from a popular children’s show that had recently made a comeback on the internet of being used as a symbol for sexual harassment.

Irony of it all is that Sato-chan’s signature pose/pose meme involves grabbing both breasts at once while shouting ” fuwafuwa da~!”.

Monster girl encyclopedia

A popular manga where the main protagonist encounters different types of monster girls each with their own unique physical attributes/personality.

Dio Brando

Lastly, we have Dio Brando from the famous anime Jojo’sBizarre Adventure. Dio is infamous for the line “Mudamudamuda” which has come to be used as an expression of showing off one’s wealth.
